I faint whenever I have to have an injection or blood taken. Imagine my horror and panic, when with Darius's delivery I realised that a spinal block with a Caesarean section was my best option. Darius was lying breech and his heart was in distress and he had to be delivered. The fact that he was 32 weeks didn't even concern me that much, I was selfishly much more concerned about how exactly I'm going to first cope with a needle being stuck in my back and secondly, trying to stay awake while the doctor performs the operation. I did in the end. I still can't even think about it though, it really was tremendously traumatic. I know I was strong and I know I was brave, yet every time I think about it, I just want to cry. And I'm still a little bit upset that the paediatrician didn't show him to me properly, I got a quick glance before they took him away to be assessed. My brain understands the reasons, my heart ached for a little bit more time with him in those first few moments.

I hoped and prayed that we could stop or at the very least delay labour, but that wasn�t to be. We woke Kaydin, I phoned Jolene and asked if she would please look after him till we�re back from the hospital. And thus began the roller coaster of your birth day. We arrived at the hospital, calm but quite worried. They booked me in, hooked up all the monitors and then observed me for the rest of the day. My regular doctor was on leave and the new doctor did her absolute best to set my fears to rest. She succeeded mostly, though I was still petrified. Just before 17:00 the nurse noticed something on your monitor print-out and called the doctor. Turns out you were in distress, I�ve been leaking amniotic fluid the whole day, labour wasn�t starting and your heart didn�t co-operate, add to that, you were lying breech. The doctor had a look at the monitor and quietly advised me to call Daddy, because she�ll have to perform an emergency c-section. I remember trying to be calm, but being absolutely terrified. This is not what I wanted, this is not the way you were supposed to be born. I was wheeled to the operating theatre, knowing full well that someone is going to be sticking a needle into my back for the spinal block. I had to go through that on my own, because they wouldn�t allow Dad in, until the procedure was done. Eventually, he was allowed into the theatre, he immediately sat down next to me, held my hand and that was all I needed. A calmness and stillness swept over me, I knew I�ll just have to endure and be strong. So I decided to just hold on to Daddy�s hand and pray. I prayed for you, for me, for all of us, but mostly I prayed for the strength to get through it and to hold on till I could see you. I have no idea how long it took, probably not too long. The attending paediatrician immediately brought you to us after you were born, you were so very, very little. So fragile and so perfect. You were taken to the NICU. I was stitched up and taken to my room. The next couple of hours are a blur, I can�t remember much and I can�t quite remember when I saw you for the first time in the NICU, I think it was the next morning, when Daddy came to visit. I remember that I was scared to hold you, not that we could, you were still too little. You had a feeding tube and monitors hooked up, there was nothing physically wrong with you though, you just needed to grow. The next couple of weeks are a fuzz of 3 hourly wake ups to pump breast milk, going to the hospital to visit with you, talking to the doctors about your progress. Talking to some of the other NICU parents, being so very appreciative of the overall kindness of everybody. Eventually I was able to drive again and then I would take Kaydin to school, go to the hospital, visit with you and then back to pick your brother up from school, back home and some evenings I would go back to visit you again. Those days were long, long days. The doctor told us that you could come home, about 3 weeks after you were born. I booked into the hospital with you, for one overnight stay, so that they could check and see how we were doing on our own. They were extremely laid back though, you being my second preemie baby and all. After we brought you home, I remember a couple more months of fuzz. Really, don�t ask me any details because I was so incredibly sleep deprived, life just passed me by. It often felt as if I was awake all the time. Which, in a way I was, what with waking you up every three hours. We did get to the point where you now feed on demand and you�ve picked up so much weight, we can see the baby fat! It�s incredibly humbling to watch one little person go at it, so strongly and with so much determination. And then, the other day, for the first time, you smiled.

Until and unless you learn them, they will present themselves over and over until you learn them. I think I learned one of the most difficult ones recently. I learned that the life I chose, the partner I chose, the child we have and the other one on the way, the house we choose to make for us, the successful people that we are, the happy content child that runs around without a care in the world. The friends we have, some of them for years already, the family we choose to keep close because of a deep mutual love and respect, I�ve learned that none of that will ever be good enough because it�s not done the way you would have done it. It�s not done in a way that you approve of. I�ve learned that I really, really can�t share my life with you. I can�t tell you about my work, because you don�t want to learn about it. I can�t share any of this pregnancy with you because of your incredible prudeness you are too uncomfortable hearing me talk to the baby when he kicks. I can�t share the every day pregnancy moments with you, because you get too uncomfortable. You act as if every pregnancy is an immaculate conception and as if baby�s just fall from the sky. Those nine months, just does not exist in your life. You didn�t even ask to come with to the Gynaecologist, it�s as if that would make it too real and you just can�t deal with that. I find this incredibly sad and such a loss on your part. Lucky for me, I do have people with whom I can share and I do. Your loss. I�ve also learned that the partner I chose, is still, somehow, after all these years not good enough for me. It�s either that or you can just not find it in your heart to admit that you were wrong when you told me that. I suppose it is a bitter pill to swallow, that your 21 year old daughter had better judgement in character than you. It sadness me greatly that I can�t share these things with you, however it also highlights the fact that I do have incredible close friends and family who love me and accept me for who I am, with all my faults and all my shortcomings, they still want to be a part of my life. They see me, they know me and they love me. Unconditionally.

Forced me to have a long hard look at me. After I managed to separate the work-me from the private-me, it was as if a light went on. So much of what I used to think about myself was wrapped up in my work-me. That�s how I defined myself. Wrapped up in work and housework and deadlines. Life was a haze of days running into weeks, weeks turning into months and the years just flew by. We moved overseas and suddenly I wasn�t that person anymore. I was a housewife. Suddenly it was ok to be in the mall at 11:00 in the morning doing grocery shopping and having a quick cup of coffee before heading home. I learnt to love it, I embraced it and am today so grateful for the change. I learnt that I�m not the work, I�m not the deadline and I�m not the proposal and I�m not the secretary. I am a wife a mother and a creative mind. I still work, now it�s a different job, I learnt to balance my time between my online work and my house work and my family. I am a wife, a mother, a business partner, a friend, a sister and somewhere in there is also an artist, a writer and a person. Trying every day, to matter.

My Japanese fighter fish. I wanted to call them Chuck and Norris. Apparently that�s not �asian�enough. Bruce and Lee go about their day quite happily, making bubble nests andguarding them enthusiastically. No stress, until they see each other, then it�s a rather impressive display of fins flapping and vigorous swimming into the wall of the bowl. They sure live up their name.

You really liked all the animals and kept naminng the ones you thought were included. You asked for another story, so I read you the one about baby Jesus and how he was born in a barn and explained that he loves us dearly. You accepted this fact and over the next couple of days, you would ask, every now and then about baby Jesus. Then one day it pops out: �When you die you go to the Dear Jesus�. I�m rather sure the Dear Jesus smiled. That great spirit in the sky with His infinite love for children.
